Thinking about a career as a psychologist in Australia, or partway through your training already? Here's a straightforward summary of how the current registration pathway works — based on guidance from the Australian Psychological Society (APS), the profession's peak body.
Step one: undergraduate study. The pathway begins with an undergraduate degree that includes an accredited major in psychology, recognised by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC).
Step two: honours or equivalent (Provisional Registration). A further year of accredited study — typically an honours year — is required to become eligible for provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. This is the point at which many people first start working under supervision as a provisional psychologist.
Step three: pathway to General Registration. From here, candidates take one of two routes: completing an internship pathway (supervised practice while working), or undertaking further postgraduate study. Either route leads to eligibility for general registration — the point at which a psychologist can practise independently.
A quick note on timing: altogether, this typically represents a minimum six-year sequence of study and supervised practice, though the exact length varies depending on which postgraduate or internship pathway a candidate takes.
One thing worth flagging: as we've covered separately in our Industry Insights, the Psychology Board has opened consultation on a proposed redesign of this entire pathway, potentially replacing the current multi-step structure with a single five-year degree. That proposal is not yet finalised, so the pathway described above remains the current, accurate process — but it's worth keeping an eye on if you're early in your studies and want to understand how the profession might look by the time you register.
